Whether we like it our not, our hair says a lot about us. It takes a lot of work to keep it looking at its best, and it can often take a lot of time. Beautiful attractive hair is well worth it, though—and it starts with the right stylist. But there are so many salons to choose from, finding a stylist you can trust can often become a trial-by-error experience—and frustrating to say the least.
Some hair 'pros' with a license work for large chains that pay stylists flat fees to make huge profits off of their hard work. These stylists often for-go a formal apprenticeship to quickly start earning pay, and they are trained to cut with a canned approach (often straight out of beauty school with maybe a week or two of crash-course hair) so they can quickly and passably cut hair and turn as many customers as they can per day—which can often result in a stifled creative environment and lackluster passion in their craft.
Many other stylists go straight out of cosmetology school and into the salon to learn on their own. While this is commendable and brave, it's also a longer learning curve and possibly quite a few mistakes along the way to developing a personal style and approach.
Then there are those of us that get through beauty school, maybe try one of these routes only to decide we're really serious about our career and want to be masters of our craft—so we take a formal apprenticeship for several years and live off of ramen and kool-aid until those we emulate and admire decide we're ready to deliver the goods. I was only kidding about ramen and kool-aid... sort-of.
